A dome bristling with rattan strands whose tips are left loose, like a haystack turned upside down. Nothing is lined up and nothing is trimmed: the irregularity is the whole point. The strands pile up densely at the core and fan out freely around the edge.

The Chios rattan pendant light is named after the Aegean island of mastic, where growers still collect the resin of mastic trees by hand on beaten-earth floors.

Lit up, the light catches every loose strand and turns the outer edge into a golden crown, while the core stays denser. The shadow on the ceiling is sharp and cut out, almost graphic. Around the shade, the room takes on a warm, textured glow. It draws the eye even from across an open-plan space.

Four widths, from 16" to 31" (40 to 80 cm), with heights from 11" to 17" (27 to 42 cm) depending on size. The 16" suits a reading corner or a round table, and two or three in a row work over a kitchen island. The 20" and 24" (50 and 60 cm) cover a dining table or an island, and the 31" (80 cm) is made for large volumes: a stairwell, a double-height living room or a table that seats ten.

Over a dining table, leave 30 to 34 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. Over a kitchen island, 30 to 36 inches. With nothing below, keep at least 7 feet of clearance.

The light connects to a standard ceiling junction box like any fixture. If you are not comfortable with wiring, a licensed electrician will install it quickly.
