A thick-walled travertine cylinder, taller than it is wide, with cavities running right up to its top edge. A dark wood cap closes it. The stone is left matte, never polished, so its texture stays dry and open to the touch.

The Paestum travertine cylinder pendant light is named after Paestum, a Greek city in southern Italy whose three Doric temples, built in porous golden limestone, have stood for twenty-five centuries.

Once lit, the light drops from the base in a round, concentrated halo. The thick walls hold it in completely, so you never catch the bulb, even when the pendant hangs low over a table. The glow sits on the surface below and the stone stays calm above it. It gives your dining table the close, gathered feel of a meal by lamplight.

Over a dining table, leave 30 to 34 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. Over a kitchen island, 30 to 36 inches. With nothing below, keep at least 7 feet of clearance.

The light connects to a standard ceiling junction box like any fixture. If you are not comfortable with wiring, a licensed electrician will install it quickly.
