A raw travertine cylinder with thick, pitted walls passes through a wood disc that extends well beyond it on every side, like the brim of a hat. The wood forms a flat, clean horizontal ledge, with the stone set through its center. The silhouette is simple and easy to read from across a room.

The Colophon travertine and wood pendant light is named after Colophon, an ancient Ionian city on the coast of present-day Turkey that once ran the nearby sanctuary of Claros, a city known for the restraint of its stone architecture.

When the bulb is on, the light leaves from the bottom of the travertine cylinder and lays a round, focused halo on the table or counter. The wide wood brim stays in shadow above, so the glow seems to start right under it. Seen from the side, the brim draws a sharp line and the stone a soft one. It gives your dining table a defined center without lighting up the whole room.

Over a dining table, leave 30 to 34 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. Over a kitchen island, 30 to 36 inches. With nothing below, keep at least 7 feet of clearance.

The light connects to a standard ceiling junction box like any fixture. If you are not comfortable with wiring, a licensed electrician will install it quickly.
