A net of twisted hemp rope, knotted stitch by stitch over a fine black steel frame, forms a rounded dome that sits right against the ceiling. There is no cord and no stem: the light hugs the surface and drops only 8" (21 cm). The mesh is open enough to show the frame and fine enough to read as one soft shape.

The Symi rope flush mount light is named after Symi, a small island in Greece's Dodecanese whose sailors lived from sponge diving, an island of ropes and nets drying in the sun in front of ochre houses stacked above the harbor.

Turn it on and the light passes through the mesh, throwing a web of shadows onto the ceiling that doubles the presence of the fixture. The beam stays warm and diffused, never direct. The beige rope turns a honey tone that warms the whole room. Even a plain white ceiling gains texture.

Over a dining table, leave 30 to 34 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. Over a kitchen island, 30 to 36 inches. With nothing below, keep at least 7 feet of clearance.

The light connects to a standard ceiling junction box like any fixture. If you are not comfortable with wiring, a licensed electrician will install it quickly.
